All around the world the smoking ban is more frequent in public spaces. Monday a legislative committee in Connecticut voted to ban smoking in 2 Indian casinos. They voted despite threats of legal action and a potential battle over nearly $ 400 million a year in slot-machine income presently added to the public purse.

The reasons why the Democratic members voted for the smoking ban were: to protect the health of casino workers, though they have to stay there all the time and work, either they smoke or not, and also to protect all those who complained health problems caused by second hand smoke.

The Republican members think of the bill that it’s unconstitutional and that it would violate the compacts between the state and the Indian tribes, which operate the Foxwoods casinos and the Mohegan Sun. Besides, they criticize that the bill prohibit smoking in the casinos, but in private clubs it’s still allowed.

At the end the bill passed, the democrats won, but the two casinos decided that they prefer to reach a resolution directly with the governor’s office and not being forced by the legislature to ban smoking.
